As one of the judges at the recent Arizona State Competition of the National Civics Bee, hosted by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry along with the Arizona Chamber Foundation, I was privileged to witness firsthand the passion and determination of young individuals ready to make a significant mark on our society. The competition was not just an academic challenge; it was a showcase of the brightest young minds, deeply committed to understanding and strengthening the fabric of our nation.
The participants, all middle school students, displayed an extraordinary level of preparation and knowledge. Their ability to articulate complex civic concepts was not only impressive but also inspiring. These young scholars demonstrated a profound concern for the future of our country and their local communities, embodying hope and the promise of leadership. What struck me most was the maturity with which these young individuals engaged with complex topics. They are learning how the processes of government and civic engagement work at an impressively young age, showing leadership skills that many adults would envy. It was clear from their performances that these students are not just preparing for future roles in leadership — they are already leaders in their own right. The event was beautifully supported by their families, who came from diverse backgrounds — immigrants, refugees, and citizens from every walk of life. The encouragement and pride from these families were palpable, illustrating a community united in nurturing the next generation of leaders and freethinkers. The immense support from the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the Arizona Chamber Foundation, and various sponsors was crucial. Their commitment is essential for the growth of this competition and ensures that these bright young minds receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve to continue their development into civic leaders who will hold the future of our country in their capable hands. It was an honor to serve alongside such distinguished colleagues in the judging panel, as well as Eileen Klein, Allison Bates, and Danny Seiden, the head of the Arizona Chamber. Special thanks to Kim Covington, who served as the emcee, and Dawn Wallace of the Flinn Foundation for hosting this inspiring event. The importance of civics in our education system cannot be overstated. The Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry hosts the Civics Bee because we recognize that a healthy democracy relies on well-informed citizens. They are not only aware of their history and government but are also motivated to engage constructively in public life. As we look forward to future competitions, we should remain committed to this vibrant initiative, hopeful for what these young individuals will accomplish for our community and our nation. Witnessing their growth and enthusiasm reaffirms my belief that our future is indeed in good hands.

This month, my faithful companion Hank and I were honored to take part in a special event that highlights the remarkable strength of young hearts. This was ABC 15’s annual Telethon, a day dedicated to supporting the incredible work of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. For the past 12 years, ABC 15 has held this heartwarming event to draw support and funds for the hospital, ensuring that it continues to provide world-class care for children facing health challenges. This year, the Telethon raised a record-breaking $1.2 million. Hank, my English Mastiff, isn’t just a pet but a therapy dog whose presence brings comfort and happiness wherever he goes. One of our greatest joys has been our visits to various homes and hospitals, especially Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which holds a special place in our hearts. It’s touching to see Hank instantly perk up and wag his tail whenever he spots a child. His intuitive connection with the kids not only lifts their spirits but also reminds us of the love animals bring into our lives. Along with the Arizona Cardinals, I have had the privilege of supporting Phoenix Children’s Hospital for many years. It’s a partnership that has enriched my life immensely, allowing me to witness firsthand the resilience of these young people and the dedication of those who care for them. During this year’s Telethon, we had the opportunity to hear directly from some of the children and families whose lives have been profoundly impacted by the hospital. The stories of their battles, triumphs, and the hope that Phoenix Children’s has instilled in them were both humbling and inspiring. Hank and I are already looking forward to next year’s Telethon, eager to meet more incredible kids and to spread even more happiness. Until then, we hope to continue sharing the kind of joy that only a dog like Hank can bring. In the midst of our fast-paced, technology-driven world, the art of walking often gets overshadowed by more glamorous forms of exercise and entertainment. Yet, beneath its unassuming surface lies a treasure trove of benefits for both body and soul. Walking isn't just about getting from point A to point B; it's about embracing the journey and rediscovering life's simple pleasures along the way.
Physical Wellness: Step by Step Towards Health Walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, requiring nothing more than a comfortable pair of shoes and a willingness to put one foot in front of the other. Despite its simplicity, walking packs a powerful punch when it comes to improving physical health. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. It strengthens muscles, improves cardiovascular fitness, and helps maintain a healthy weight. Moreover, walking is gentle on the joints, making it an ideal form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. By incorporating walking into our daily routine, we can take proactive steps towards a healthier, happier life. Mindful Movement: A Journey Within In our hyperconnected world, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of distractions and obligations. Walking offers a reprieve from the noise and chaos, allowing us to reconnect with ourselves and the world around us. When approached mindfully, walking becomes a form of meditation in motion, inviting us to tune into the rhythm of our breath, the sensation of our feet touching the ground, and the sights and sounds of our surroundings. This mindful awareness not only calms the mind and reduces stress but also cultivates a more profound sense of presence and gratitude for the present moment. With each step, we have the opportunity to let go of worries about the past and anxieties about the future and be fully present with the beauty and wonder of life unfolding in front of us. Soulful Exploration: Connecting with Nature and Community Walking is not just about exercise; it's also about exploration and connection – with nature, with ourselves, and with others. Whether we're wandering through a leafy forest, strolling along a sun-drenched beach, or meandering down bustling city streets, walking allows us to immerse ourselves fully in the rich tapestry of life. It opens our eyes to the wonders of the natural world – the vibrant colors of a sunset, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, the symphony of birdsong filling the air. It also connects us with our fellow human beings, providing opportunities for meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and moments of connection that transcend language and cultural barriers. In this way, walking becomes not just a solitary pursuit but a communal experience that enriches our lives and strengthens our sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves. Creative Inspiration: Walking as Fuel for the Imagination Many great thinkers and artists throughout history have recognized the power of walking to ignite the flames of creativity. From Aristotle to Thoreau to Steve Jobs, walking has served as a wellspring of inspiration, sparking new ideas and insights that may have otherwise remained dormant. There's something about the act of walking – the rhythmic motion of our bodies, the fresh air in our lungs, the ever-changing scenery unfolding before our eyes – that clears the cobwebs from our minds and opens the floodgates of imagination. Whether we're grappling with a thorny problem at work, seeking inspiration for a creative project, or simply daydreaming about the possibilities that lie ahead, a stroll can provide the perfect opportunity to let our thoughts wander, and our ideas flow freely. In a world that often values speed, productivity, and efficiency above all else, the art of walking serves as a gentle reminder to slow down, savor the moment, and rediscover life's simple pleasures. Whether we're seeking improved physical health, greater mindfulness, deeper connections with nature and community, or a spark of creative inspiration, walking offers something for everyone. So, let's lace up our shoes, step outside, and embrace the journey one step at a time. Walking, often taken for granted, is a simple yet profoundly therapeutic activity.
